In the chilly evenin’ of ’87, I found myself drawn to the shore of Skye’s rugged coast. The sky was all bundled up in clouds, gently rustlin’ by a breeze that tickled through the heather. I was just takin’ a stroll along them weathered rocks when somethin’ caught my eye. A massive shape broke the water’s surface, silvery skin glistening like it was tryin’ to catch the last of the day’s light. At first, I thought it was some kinda seal, but then it started haulin’ itself onto the shore with these powerful flippers. And that’s when I got a proper look at it – long neck, face that looked almost human-like. Its eyes, oh they were somethin’ else. Intelligent, almost sad-lookin’, they seemed to stare right into my soul. I was frozen, couldn’t move or speak or nothin’. Then, in a way that defied everythin’ I knew about the world, it started… changin’. Its body stretched and shifted, like it was made of water itself. And then, standin’ there on them rocks, was a woman. She looked right at me, her form shimmering like the sea, before she walked away towards the cliffs. I stood there, heart poundin’, breath catchin’, tryin’ to make sense of what I’d just seen. Terror gripped my insides, but so did awe – and somethin’ else. A sadness, deep down in my gut. It was like… like I felt her pain, her loneliness. It’s a feelin’ that’s stayed with me ever since, hauntin’ my dreams, remindin’ me of the day I saw the Selkie of Skye. I ain’t never told no one about this before – prolly thought they’d laugh at me or somethin’. But sittin’ here tonight, lookin’ into this fire, I feel like I shoulda shared it sooner. ‘Cause even if you don’t believe me, that’s okay. I know what I saw. And I know she’s still out there, waitin’ for her love to return from the sea.
