Ogopogo - Story

Alright, gather ’round. I gotta tell ya ’bout this time in ’68 when I was livin’ down by Okanagan Lake. It was one of those perfect summer afternoons, not a cloud in sight, and I was prolly the happiest fella on earth just tryin’ to catch me some lunch. I’d found this little spot, real peaceful-like, where the water was calm as glass. I was sittin’ there, recastin’ my line, when suddenly, somethin’ made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. It was like the whole lake just… paused. Then, outta nowhere, this humongous creature breaks the surface, right in front of me! I swear, it looked like a horse, but bigger’n any I’d ever seen, and it was slitherin’ through the water, makin’ this eerie hissin’ sound. I couldn’t believe my eyes. It musta been 40-50 feet long, just glidin’ along with its body movin’ in these big S-shapes. I tell ya, I’d never seen nothin’ like it. But then, as quick as it appeared, the thing dipped back under the water and was gone. I sat there for a while, tryin’ to wrap my head around what I’d just witnessed. My heart was racin’, but I couldn’t help feelin’ a bit exhilarated too. I knew I had to get back to shore, so I reeled in me line and made tracks. I never did catch lunch that day, but I sure as heck caught somethin’ else – the memory of that strange creature’s eerie hiss will stay with me till my dyin’ day.

Overview

Alright, listen up. These things are out there, in Okanagan Lake, that’s for sure. Folks have been seeing ’em since 1925, and they ain’t all just drunken fishermen with tall tales either. The Ogopogo, they call it, prolly ’cause of the deep rumblin’ sound it makes, like a train or boat engine, echoin’ through the lake. Now, what does this critter look like? Well, people describe it as a long, snake-like thing, with multiple humps breakin’ the water’s surface. It’s estimated to be between 30 to 50 feet (9 to 15 meters) long, but its weight’s anyone’s guess. Some say it resembles Nessie from over in Scotland, but I ain’t so sure about that. It’s more like a big ol’ eel or a water snake, somethin’ you’d see slitherin’ around in the lake if it weren’t for all them humps. As for when and where folks spot it, well, there ain’t no set pattern. It seems to show up anytime of year, but most sightings are during summer months, probly ’cause more people are out on the water then. As for where, Okanagan Lake’s its home turf, but it’s been seen in other nearby bodies of water too. Some say it likes the deeper parts of the lake, near the bottom, but I reckon it moves around a lot, like any critter would. Now, what does this thing do? Most folks report seein’ it swimmin’ with a real sinuous motion, kinda like a snake in water. It’ll break the surface now and then, causin’ waves and disturbances, but mostly it keeps to itself. I’ve heard tell of folks tryin’ to get close, only for the Ogopogo to disappear without a trace. Some say they’ve seen it attack boats or even other animals, but those stories are few and far between. I ain’t no expert, never claimed to be, but I’ve talked to enough people who’ve seen this thing to know it’s real. The experts, they can sit in their offices all day, pourin’ over books and papers, but until they get out here and see what we’re dealin’ with, well, they ain’t got nothin’. So, keep your eyes peeled, folks. If you’re lucky – or unlucky, dependin’ on how you look at it – you just might catch a glimpse of the Ogopogo yourself.
