Grootslang - Story
In the dead of night in 1924, I found myself drivin’ through the Drakensberg Mountains. The moon was full and bright, casting long shadows that danced on the craggy peaks, makin’ it look like somethin’ outta a fairytale. I was just stoppin’ to take in the view when suddenly, I heard this weird noise comin’ from up the mountain. It sounded like rocks fallin’, but different somehow.
I turned towards the sound and my eyes near popped outta my head. There, slitherin’ across the terrain, was a creature so big it’d make a grown man weep. It had to be over 60 feet long, with scales shimmerin’ like a dragon’s and a horse’s head on top of all that. It moved like a snake, but it wasn’t no snake I ever seen before. As it went by, the ground shook and deep tracks were left behind, provin’ its size.
My heart was poundin’ like a drum in my chest. I couldn’t move at first, just stood there starin’ at this thing as it made its way down the mountain. Then, finally, some sense came back to me and I turned around, runnin’ as fast as I could towards my car. I didn’t look back, didn’t wanna see if that creature was chasin’ after me. All I know is, I got in my car and drove off, leavin’ that beast to whatever it was doin’ up there in the mountains. Never been back since, prolly never will. Some things are better left unseen, I reckon.
Overview
In them rugged peaks of South Africa’s Drakensberg Mountains, there’s tales of a colossal serpent prowlin’ about. The Grootslang, they call it, first spotted back in 1924, and since then, folks have been seein’ this critter all over the place – from the mountains themselves to the forests and caves scattered ’round. Now, I ain’t one of them academics who sit in their ivory towers dismissing what real people on the ground are experiencin’, so let’s take a look at what folks are reportin’. This beast, it’s described as somethin’ straight outta your worst nightmares. It’s got a horse-like head, covered in scales like a snake, and it’s said to have a forked tongue that’d make a rattlesnake proud. As for size, well, reports vary, but some say this thing can reach up to 150 feet long and 6 feet thick – that’s longer than a football field! And as for weight, who knows? It’s probly heavier than my old Ford truck, that’s for sure. Now, behavior-wise, the Grootslang ain’t no friendly neighborhood critter. It’s aggressive, attackin’ livestock and humans on sight. That’s why folks call it the “big snake” – it’s a real pain in the neck if you live ’round there. But here’s where things get interestin’: this serpent can climb trees! I mean, have you ever seen a snake do that? Me neither. And the sounds it makes? A hissin’ sound followed by a loud, deep roar that echoes through them mountains like a banshee wailin’. It’s enough to make your blood run cold. As for where this thing hangs out, well, it seems to prolly live in the Drakensberg range, but sightings have been reported all over South Africa. And the evidence? Well, folks have found large footprints and damaged trees and rocks in areas where sightings occurred. So, it ain’t just some tall tale people are tellin’. No, these things are out there, lurkin’ in the shadows of them African mountains, waitin’ for the right moment to strike. And until someone can prove otherwise, I’m gonna believe what folks are sayin’. After all, absence of evidence ain’t evidence of absence, now is it?
